The
Ying Quartet is comprised of
three brothers-cellist David, violist Phillip and violinist Timothy-and
a sister-violinist Janet. Born in Chicago, they first performed together in 1992 in Jesup, Iowa, while on an unusual rural residency funded by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Their repertory incorporates
contemporary music, featuring works by American composers and producing a distinctly American quartet repertory. They have appeared in virtually
every major American city and in Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan and Taiwan. They were winners of the
Naumburg Chamber Music Award in 1993. The ensemble is now on the faculty of the
Eastman School of Music and Quartet-in-residence there. They have also taught at Northwestern University and the Interlochen and Brevard Music Festivals.
